    First Strides Lynleehana
    First Strides Tnghuamei
    First Strides Tanakaami
The Blue House stood silently as the rays of the morning Sun flowed through its colossal panes, spilling over to the velvety rug two pairs of heels dug into. They clicked with confidence but each step embodied the lack of punctuality between the Community Leader and the Minister Of Foreign Affairs.

“You think she’ll do well out there in the world?”, Lyn asked Hua Mei, her eternal mentor in and out of the office.

“What do you mean out there in the world, good Jieun. She’s just going to visit the Rasians.”, Hua Mei waved off the sort of anxiety she had anticipated from her protege.

“I’m just saying, I saw the internet comments, people have been mocking us for giving her fifty thousand Cunae just to be a diplomat and an honorary princess. We don’t even live in a constitutional monarchy. So, she had better not mess this up”.

Hua Mei simply snorted, almost as if she was disappointed by Lyn for some reason, “That’s the normal pay for our diplomats. If they want to huff and puff about giving our honorary princess an average wage, then so be it. You’re not giving the poor girl enough props, we’re talking about a former girl group member here.”

Just as their secretive conversation had ended, the double doors in front of them swung open, revealing the princess awaiting by the windows - her porcelain skin not at all singed by the mellow sunlight and her brownish hair gently penduluming with each step she took. The manila folder she had clutched with her right hand appeared crumpled and her eyes were void of appreciation for the beauty of the nature ahead.

“Ami.”, Lyn addressed the honorary princess-turned-diplomat.

At the slightest noise, Ami jumped in shock as she spun around, realized who was in front of her and gave a quick but deep bow. Hua Mei chuckled, pressing the lass down onto a cushioned chair. “Relax, right? If we’re to follow the bygone traditions, we are supposed to be the ones doing that to you.”.

The princess sighed as deep as her bow, “I’m just anxious, is all. I’ve never done such a thing alone before. Usually, Hua Mei unnie will be there with me as someone I can consult whenever we do the conferences. I … I don’t really know how to formulate and approach situations should they go sour. In the training course, they did say always to de-escalate but how do I know which method I should use to de-escalate tension … “.

Before she could squeak another word, Lyn forced an exhale causing the quivering diplomat to straighten her posture. Whilst she massaged her nose bridge, the CL asked her a question, “What were you before all of these, Ami?”

She hesitantly mumbled, “A CPOP idol.”

Lyn then followed up the conversation, “ I mean let’s be real here but I doubt there will be any correlations between all the singing, the dancing, and the entertaining out there on the music videos and the work being done by the diplomatic force. But, if you think hard enough, Ami, there’s things you learnt in your industry that you can transfer over here. In fact, that probably gives you an edge over the rest of the fellows here. You’ve got the people skills. Don’t you guys do interviews and sho-”

“Handshake and fan signing events too, social dynamics and all that jazz”, Hua Mei added on as Ami snapped her fingers at her mentor in agreement.

“See, you’ve got the knowledge and the experience. You just have to … I don’t know, ‘idol’ it up. We’re talking Rasians here, they love anyone with flair and flamboyance.”

By then, it was Hua Mei who was pointing her fingers at Lyn, “They sure god damn do. Went to dinner with the Rasians and they won’t let me tone it down. The best way to a Rasian’s heart is a little bit of pizzazz both with the speaking and in the actions.” Ami confusedly accepted the nuggets of wisdom that was served to her. “Flair and flamboyance, yes, I got it ma’ams”, she hesitantly thanked her two teachers. Hua Mei rolled over to her side, gently squeezing her palm to comfort the lass.

“Diplomacy is an old man’s game, as my training course teacher told me when I started. It’s kinda true - I mean, he passed due to old age whilst still being in the game so to speak but who’s to say the young ones aren’t good at it too, no?”, Hua Mei smirked at the princess. Ami returned the favour, smiling for the first time in two days since the news of her solo venture to the world outside of the Community reached her. Lyn couldn’t help but crack a smile herself, though whether it was due to Ami opening up slowly to the rest of the rabble or Hua Mei’s infrequent soft side would never be known.

“You can do it, Ami.”, she consoled her force’s newest member.

The clock struck eight, a signal for Tanaka Ami to disappear once more into the numerous conference rooms of the Blue House to get briefed by the transport. The doors behind her slowly crept to a closure, the gust from their motion blowing her hair forward to signal where she should look metaphorically and literally. As her steps disappear off her radar, Hua Mei jokingly jabbed Lyn on the arm, causing the Community to flinch and drop a paperwork or two.

“Nice analogy, miss Lee. You gotta learn not to express anger with your breaths. You’re huffing way too audibly.”

    “I wasn’t angry, I was sighing … ‘cause I’m worried.”

    “Worried about?”

“Well, for one, the public opinion and two which is more important, her.”

“So that shtick about you pushing her to a pedestal and saying ‘oh yeah Ami, you can do it’ was just the political Lyn flair speaking then. So, she can’t do it after all?”

“Nah, she can and she will. And maybe next time you can stop shoehorning in your dead mentor in every anecdote you make ... good Jieun.”

Aiyrania was always a place that surprised. Sitting atop the eponymous plateau, it is a vast and warm place, dry and shielded by mountains on all sides. And yet this vast area is home to the largest and most populous Rasian cities. Much of the empire's workforce and draftable population hailed from this place and they were, first and foremost a proud people, for it was they together with the collapsing Haemian empire that formed what now is, Old Ras, and in their privileges position they set themselves above many, perhaps even above all. Large towers of glass and steel consume the cities of the plateau, growing ever larger and closer to one another, strands of light connecting by the road network.

And yet Thousand Pillars would be odd, even among the many suffocating cities prevalent to the region. It would be quite easy to see from the plane as it landed, the city was as if one had cut a gigantic hole in it, and covered it in green. Gigantic channels encircled the Old City, more a palace than a town, raised up on high terraces with retaining walls rising up and sloping at varying heights and angles. A city that is large can be rather intimidating, and yet the way this entirely different world stands, despite its much smaller size, it seems as if the New City is designed to bend away from it, to shrink away as if the palace radiated outwards, a star amidst giants.

The welcoming party was made up of two greeters and several attendants. A man in robes of bright orange and red, contrasted by a woman in hews of green with sparrows in flight caught upon her dress. Bowing in unison, the two spoke just the same:

"We greet you emissary, in the name of our King of Kings, our Satrap, and the Holy Flame. May our hearth warm you and our hospitality comfort you. Our herald awaits your words with warmth and we to take you to their side."

Their act finished, the two stood up, flashing smiles at the diplomat, as they awaited her reply. Such was the strangeness of the prefecture, and such were its customs.

“Anything the matter, ma’am?”, one of Ami’s miniature entourage tapped her on the shoulder after noticing the prolonged unmoved gaze of the young lady as she nestled herself on the window seat of the small plane. Taken aback by the gesture, she nearly sprung towards the overhead luggage storage, which was met with stifled laughter and cramped smirks from the rest of her security detail.

She simply smiled at them laughing at her expense and graciously accepted the kindness of her “caretakers”. Though bringing up the mood within the cramped craft didn’t bring down the butterflies in her stomach. The glorious view of the plateau, a rare if not non-existent view in her homeland, caught the stars in her eyes as she fixated on the elegance a simple land formation bathing in the heat can provide. It didn’t help that the organic blend of nature and man through the juxtaposition of the palace and the channels that surrounded it was as mesmerizing as the big picture.

“Nowhere in the Community”, she lamented.

The time to face the music emerged as the cabin door sizzled open. As she approached the tarmac, the welcoming party stood out like a carnation on a bush with their brightly coloured garment, a contrast to the soil of the land. She bowed in return, signalling for her entourage to bring out the presents they have hauled all the way from the homeland.

“I do thank you for your welcome, which is as warm as the wind that glides across the seams of my dress. I very much look forward to meeting the people of Aiyrania and the gracious host, the herald. Before we depart however, I would like to present gifts from my homeland, the Community, as a show of gratitude for the kindness you have imparted so far.”

From behind her, hampers of the local fruits, strawberries and mango adored the greeters. A basket of the local silk also made an appearance, something that Hua Mei insisted be included in the itinerary. As far as Ami knew, the middle aged minister has got the diplomatic smarts so she went with every single of her suggestions. She waited keenly to explore the new environment that enthralled her so.

"He who is Šâhanšâh's word and will made manifest thanks you for your gift, noble lady." the man bowed as some of the attendants filed out to receive the gifts, heads lowered at all times, "As he receives it so too does Šâhanšâh."

"In turn Šâhanšâh knows that generosity is met with generosity." the woman bowed this time, "For as there is no dusk without the dawn so too can there be no receiving without giving."

Snapping her fingers the woman stood aside, six attendants shuffling in pairs of two. The first pair bore two heavy bolts of fabric, velvet silk in red and blue. Behind them two more carried boxes of incense and further behind them two more bore bore unmarked containers.

"As ceremony demands for our exchange, we give you silk, incense and spice, gifts earned and gifts made." the man said, the nature of the unmarked containers revealed, "These are the products of all our people, the gift of our land and the generosity of our Šâhanšâh to those who come as friends."

"But please, we are certain duty rouses you to perform as your station entails." the woman extended her hand towards vehicles that were prepared, "We shall take you to one who speaks with Šâhanšâh's voice."

The two, flanked by what attendants remained, escorted Ami towards the vehicle that would carry her towards the Old City, where the meeting was to take place. The airport, though originally built on the outskirts, had long since been consumed by the city, and the road that led to the inner city was uncluttered, traffic having been cleared in that section so as to not delay the Communal emissary.

Aiyrania and its cities were never touched by the civil war, blessed as they were by their secluded position within the eastern mainland, and so the cities were pristine and unmarked by any sort of violence. Trees of all sorts, from palms to cypress trees were placed along the roads of the city, and as the inner city got closer, and the roads contracted further, their leaves provided shelter from the sun, light breaking through the canopy dancing upon the road as it wound towards the city center.

The Old City, or Palace district, was much larger than it appeared from the air. A marvel of ancient engineering, what once served nobility and as a retreat for the ruling house of the empire now served as a tourist destination, droves of people gathered both outside of and inside of the city. And at the entrance into the old city a massive gate stood, outside of which the vehicle stopped.

"Vehicles are not allowed within the Taht my lady, so forgive us but we are going to have to escort you on foot." the man said, opening the door to the car and escorting Ami out.

The gates were massive, a mark of a bygone era, two gigantic lamassu flanking either side of it, winged bulls with the heads of crowned men. They stood at six times the height of the average man and the gate even higher, pillars depicting a procession of warriors, nobles and priests leading across the channel and into the Old City proper.

What followed was a burst of colour. The terraces and retaining walls, something that could only slightly be made out, now revealed their true beauty. Every wall and every gate bore bas-reliefs coloured in vivid details. What once were just priests and warriors became processions of people bearing offerings and instruments, cattle and animals herded ever onward towards some great goal. No two people were alike, each wall depicting a folk of different dress and make, a different people that once came to this city to offer tribute to a king of kings.

Stairs rose ever upwards into the greater palace complex, lush gardens and green grasses giving off the impression of an oasis, an earthly paradise, and something that in those days, and even in these, was meant to stir something within, to rouse and to galvanize. Cloth of all colours hung over the openings in the ceiling, the floor bellow reflecting the colour of the textile through which the light shone, and in turn heavy ornaments of metals and semi-precious stones hung off the walls, almost as if the building itself wore jewelry and fine clothing.

Depictions shifted from scenes of revelry to scenes of reverence, from scenes of harvest to scenes of war. One second offerings of wine and incense and water and earth were being presented to the ruler, who in the next led processions of these many different warriors, disparate groups from many varying lands, towards an unknown war. Then the scene shifted to gigantic oxen tilling fields and people celebrating a harvest, revelers dancing and playing music under a starry sky. The scene finally shifted to divine creatures of myth and gods themselves, before turning into a priestly procession offering gifts to a single figure, a crowned man encircled by wings holding a circle in some cases and a bow in others.

At long last the two escorts led Ami towards a door, one of the many in the large winding palace, leading towards a spacious room overlooking the rest of the city, a large balcony meant for lounging and enjoyment. The floor was decorated with numerous carpets, blasts of light and intricate shapes blending into each other within the complex weave of the fabric, no one carpet alike or even symmetrical. Each unique in its own way. Above the ceiling stood marks of progress, proof that one had not been transported into the past, lights and ceiling fans hanging over the room, providing cooling air when the large terrace could not.

Many different people stood in two rows as they waited for the diplomat, with even more vibrant clothing than the two escorts, purples and dark blues, pinks and oranges, cyans and crimsons, all interwoven together, at times depicting animals and at times merely shapes, or just colours blending into one another. All bore masks of wood and metal and of varying complexity, all save the herald.

At the head of the group sat an man in his fifties with a trimmed white beard. He wore a robe of blue covered in disks of orange and gold encircled by halos, the hem showing a procession of lions on a black field. Whispers started among the arrayed nobility, some fanning themselves as they watched the girl walk towards the aged emissary. Amidst all the light it gave a slightly sinister foreboding to the meeting. Around the halfway point the nobles stopped leaning in towards each other, the whispers ceasing immediately as a small chime played, an attendant next to the old man ringing it.

"Greetings to you, noble emissary of your people." the man spoke, a voice of firm authority, "I salute you in the name of Šâhanšâh, in the name of his people and in the name of our city. I come to you in the formal garb of my folk, in one of the greatest cities of our people, to hear words you bring to the ears of Šâhanšâh, with the Council's authority to deliberate upon them and act within accordance to our laws."

With Ami having reached his seat he stood up at long last, the nobles dispersing from the room, the entire scene as if some kind of theater, centuries of traditions choreographed in a display designed specifically for situations like these, "I hope your flight was enjoyable?"

“You are much too kind. I may have repeated myself like a vinyl on the phonograph but there’s no steering away from the truth. How ever can I repay you for the sights you have embedded into my eyes. Šâhanšâh’s generosity never ceases.”, Ami confidently spoke, her pronunciation the fruit of many rigoring hours practicing speeches imbued with Rasian phonetics. Her own men received the gifts as she was whisked away to the inner machinations of the Old City. The airport did seem to stick out like a sore thumb though even the thumb itself was nothing to discard; its architecture blending in the more they progress inwards.

“To say that this was how we want to embody the spirit of the heat back in the homeland is an understatement, I am sure many Communals will enjoy the atmosphere of Aiyrania.”, she commented as they speed through the scenery. Upon arrival, she stepped out of the transport, eagerly following the steps of her hosts whilst trying not to awe audibly in fear of being improper. Her security detail couldn’t help but lament on the plainness of the modern minimalism the Blue House held. “Even their historical mural’s got more bang than us”, a bodyguard muttered under his breath. The piece de resistance however was the balcony with its assault of colours and contrast.

With each step she took, Ami became more self-conscious. Glancing at the murmuring congregation didn’t help quell the fear of failure that was so glued into her psyche. Her feet began retracting every time she forced her leg forward but running away now would only solidify the failure she so feared. Therefore, what became of feeble shuffles accidentally evolved into bold strides. Stewing in her own thoughts caused her to advance towards the aged male without a single acknowledgement of his salutations. It was only when she arrived within earshot did she begin to speak.

“My companions and I kindly receive Šâhanšâh and his people’s warm welcome. You are truly too generous for mere visitors like us. We had a safe and peaceful passage to Ras, thank the powers be that made it happen.”, she replied in turn.

Bowing as deep as she can, Ami continued the conversation. “I come on behalf of the Community’s current administration in order to seek and mayhaps with time, establish an official friendship with the people of Ras. It is no secret that we have admired Ras and her people even before we have made this passage but the Lee Administration back in the homeland would like to formalize the love we have for the land with her very own folks.”

"A treaty of friendship?" the man raised an eyebrow, "Very well then." gesturing with his hand towards a table that sat against the parapet, the man and his attendant lead Ami into a seat. The masked attendant stood behind the emissary, holding several folders and waiting to be called upon.

Sitting after Ami, the herald looked over the edge of the parapet at the gardens bellow. The view wasn't high up, only a story or so, and the gardens extended downwards, terrace to terrace, water fountains, fields of flowers, bushes and trees decorated the paths until they reached the canal bellow, the surrounding buildings like small islands amidst the lush verdant green. Bellow a group of tourists was being led about by a guide.

Finally turning towards the Communal, he put his hands together and spoke, "It has been over a year since the incident", his face betrayed no emotion, though calling the civil war an incident may be quite telling to some, "By decree of the Council diplomatic activity was to be pulled back until the beginning stages of Restoration and Revitalisation were complete. Now that this time period has passed, here you are, one of possibly many."

He tapped his finger on the table and a folder was gently placed next to him, "The people are always willing to embrace in friendship all bellow the sky, it is, after all, our way. Yet i hope, and do not take my words as disappointment, that you desire to do more with this treaty than just reaffirm a friendship. Ras is always willing to take negotiations one step further. After all, is there no finer thing than diplomacy?"

The furrowing of the brow concerned the lady, her heart skipping a beat with the mere motion of a minute detail of the face. Acrophobia aside, Ami felt uneasy as if she had accidentally struck a nerve by innocently fulfilling the agenda of her superiors. Though the civil war was over, having been asked to connect after such horrid times have only recently passed was adequate enough pain for torn lovers, let alone a country that faced a tragedy. Regardless of how the herald felt or responded, Ami was ready to take back the offer and flee with her tail between her legs. Fortunately for her, his tone was melancholic albeit drizzled with a hint of stoicism.

Taken aback by the curiosity of the herald, Ami nonetheless took the question in stride, “Nothing can be more powerful than the ability to heal in the presence of fellowship. Even the strongest people in history had shoulders to rely on and companionship to seek. It is just how human dynamics evolved to where we are now. As for the intricacies of the friendship, I am afraid but only my superiors as of now knows of the bigger picture of how the Community would like to dive into our official friendship. What I am privy to disclose would be this.”

From her manila envelope emerged stapled paperwork dictating several categories of resources that could be utilized for the sole purposes of standing on one’s two feet once more. “The Community strives to be amongst the forward-thinking countries of the world and have saved up resources for a rainy day however seeing how it poured somewhere else in the world, we thought that it may very well be put to good use even though it’s not our rainwater to flush away.”.

After giving the herald more than enough time to take in the offer of the Lee administration, Ami continued, “Of course, this is not to curry in favour but as a response from the empathy we expressed towards our fellow humans. No soul needs to experience the pains of war, no matter the agenda. And of course, what we have to offer is but a small amount to any other country out there but alas this is what we can only give as a land that is so small in size.”

"Empathy?" the man raised another eyebrow. Tapping his finger on the table again the attendant placed another folder besides. Reading them up he seemed to spend quite a bit of time comparing the two, his assistant motionless as a statue behind him. Tapping yet another finger on the table he took another folder and went to comparing, the minutes stretching out, only the noise of the shuffling papers and the song of the birds outside making sounds.

"One may find this to be adequate, the costs of covering transport of the aid itself seems to be no issue either. In accordance with the Ocheia Agreements these materials can be used in public works projects and the rest can be either put in storage until reassignment or placed within the dole proper." He looked at one of the folders he had taken out, reading it while speaking, "And yet one finds such contributions, or rather their implications...troubling." Closing the folder he set it down on the table, putting it to his left rather than with the other folders.

"I am authorised by the Council to negotiate on behalf of my people whereas you, dear lady, from your explanation, appear to be acting the role of courier if this is all you bring. I do hope i am mistaken. Wonderful as your offer of assistance may be it is not what would provide actual aid to a nation in need of it. What is needed, is a sustainable growth. And such an undertaking would require aid with a bit more commitment than this. Our people are not beggars and yet to turn away aid is to amount to being worse than one, hence our predicament."

Putting his hands together the man looked over at Ami, perhaps not grimly but certainly sternly, "If you, young emissary, are not authorised to discuss anything beyond this agreement, i understand, and hold you no ill will, yet i must ask that we are either given someone who is or that said authority is provided to you. Our desire is to strengthen economic ties and reach agreements that will not only bring back foreign business that left our lands and strengthen our own businesses abroad, but also provide new opportunities, and in rejuvenating what falters also provide you with profit."

Post by oneesann Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:17 pm

“Shit, maybe that wasn’t the right string of words.”, Ami thought to herself, visibly grimacing as the silence droned on ever since the herald’s last breathed word. It was bad enough that a country the magnitude of Ras would have scoffed at the Community’s meager offer but having struck a nerve with the very same people she ought to be in kahoots with was just as bad. Fortunately, it seemed that there was no qualms about the size of the aid offered on hand

“An aid is an aid”, Ami once heard Hua Mei drilling the moral into Lyn’s head during times of leisure.

However, she was still on edge as the herald began to lay it on her, associating her with a courier’s importance and putting invisible yet severely tangible pressure on the hopeful diplomat. She pressed her tongue in her left cheek hard, regretful of how she had presented herself to the clearly experienced individual that was set to be her ‘opponent’ on the planes of oration and communication. She gathered herself enough to steer the conversation to a path of ‘salvation’.

I do apologise, kind sir. Mayhaps I have not expressed my intentions nor the intentions of my administration properly. I do come with the authority to be able to proceed further with the establishment of our symbiotic relationship however I will have to leave the specificities of said relationship for another dialogue. I believe matters like numbers and datas are best left when the foundations are laid and this is where I come in. I may not be able to relay much from my administration but my objective is abstract and thus I hope at least to put down the bricks of the bridge that I dream of building. I hope this may have cleared any doubts of my presence here.”

As soon as the sentences left her lips, Ami’s heart bumped against her ribcage. She wasn’t supposed to go too far from merely proposing the offer of aid and testing the waters of a Rasian-Communal relationship. But, it would have been a missed opportunity to be a maverick, Hua Mei would say. As she reviewed the mental recordings of the many dry runs she had undergone with the notorious MOFA, she would have had some leeway to push forward with a few things given it was done correctly.

With a strenuous exhalation, she pushed forward with the foundation. “As is our intention. Both our people and businesses will surely benefit from the beginning of this friendship. With new rapport comes new land to venture outwards to and more people to accommodate to, such is the way of business. It is almost as if the very essence of business itself thrives on friendship, which has been a vanishing perspective as of late. We, the Community, hope to continue operating on that perspective however. Components such as tariffs, taxes and exports surely come with the numbers but I hope we can agree to mutually benefit from the reduction of the numerical aspects of commerce.”

A flash of brilliant brainstorming emerged from the previously bumbling diplomat. “Tourism, kind sir. What better way to forge bonds than to immerse oneself in each other’s culture and heritage. And what better way to do so than to cultivate a sense of adventure between the two of us. Surely …”, Ami drifted her hand towards the sea of natural beauty infront of them before resuming. “...the Community may not be as robust with colour as Aiyrania but we might have things in store for those who are keen to step into our abode.”

"You have a remarkable gift for speaking much while saying little." the diplomat looked the girl up and down, "So to summarise, and please do correct me if i have misinterpreted the intentions conveyed yet again, i am getting on in my years, but: You can negotiate further agreements with me but you won't. You believe a treaty such as this and you sending aid would be enough to encourage businesses to move. To restore faith in place of a war you would present a piece of paper without renewed trust and hope it works. As such you come into our nation with a verbal promise to "do something" in the future without discussing it as you await for some metaphoric foundations to be established. Lastly you blurt out something about tourism, which either indicates that you want to sign into place a treaty that would ease transportation, or that you're adding yet more vague verbal promises on top of the many other "profits" you believe will come from this treaty."

He placed his hands on his lap, taking a deep breath before continuing, "If i forgot anything please do help me, old age has finally gotten to me if diplomacy has changed so much since last i participated that verbal promises of greatness are enough to sway someone to your way of thinking. Or perhaps what was once an experienced diplomatic corps has been replaced by politicians, performers and sycophants? Or are we returning to the days when barbarian gunboats annexing a port is the only way to elicit a reaction out of your nation?"

"But perhaps it is my fault." he exhaled, "The empire expects much of nations such as yours. Such potential. Perhaps Šâhanšâh's merciful advocating in your name is too tinted by kindness? That is quite alright. Or perhaps you do not comprehend the situation at hand. The regime has not changed and the nation remains the same. What relations we've had with you and yours, as well as others, has not changed, past wrongs have not been forgotten and forgiven, or past rights neglected and discarded. If you wish to act as if an incident such as this one has wiped the slate clean, then by all means, we shall not prevent you. Do not expect the same of us."

Extending his arm upwards, he was handed a folder by his attendant, "We are not here to offer you fake promises like some barbarians, or to smile and pretend as if all is well. Without concrete numbers and facts all agreements become ephemeral, falsehoods on the winds. If all your nation wishes is to send us charity, then our nation is grateful for that, and we apologise for thinking higher of you. If however you are a diplomat, capable of thinking on your own or contacting your superiors if not, then i offer you this." he pushed the folder to her side of the table, "Concessions, lowering of tariffs, potential subsidies from the rejuvenation budget for businesses you vouch for from your nation. All this and more. If your tourism proposal is not bluster then i will, as my authority allows, immediately get the ministry of culture on the phone as well as the ministry of tourism."

Sitting back in his chair the envoy eyed the foreign emissary. Performers as diplomats? No wonder half the upper class in the city found this hilarious, "If you wish to exchange empty promises and platitudes we believe you have nations like the dictatorship that borders us to engage with. They'll smile at you as you smile at them as their population suffers under bonds of slavery and you do nothing but watch. Or you may visit the kingdom in the north, and enjoy getting dragged into another crisis of theirs. Or our errant brothers to the west, they are far more tolerant of such talk. We however can offer more. We offer the world, as is our right, and from our promise comes an actual concrete guarantee of prosperity. Others may pick up this offer where you would not, and thus may profit while you regret your inaction."

He put his hands together once again, leaning into the table, "A concrete answer would very much be appreciated in this case, noble emissary. The empire thanks you for your forthcoming candor."

First Strides Empty Re: First Strides

Post by oneesann Sun Jun 21, 2020 4:10 pm

With each word, her teeth drilled harder into her gums as she had gritted them so tightly a locked jaw would have been in order. A huge swelling discomfort radiating on her chest was begging for her to drop the act and flee to the tarmac however this wasn’t one of her live performances where she could call it off and try again the other night and still have the empathy of her fans. This was more akin to that poker game she played with idols of other agencies on TV, where she personally loses nothing should she fold but her superiors would take the blow. The Rasian herald did little to alleviate the situation, though alleviation of a girl’s tension wasn’t really a priority of his assumingly. The deal he had put forward seemed too good to be true to an amateur’s eyes yet they would be fairer than most scenarios that she had trained for in ‘diplomat school’, Ami remarked as her eyes sped past each line trying to analyze the offer as accurately as she can.

As much as she despised having to rescind her independence on the Rasian front, Ami thought it was about time to get an extra pair of hands on board. With a small bow and a quivering smile, Ami excused herself. “Benevolent sir, I assure you there would be no need for another annexation of a port to get the Community to open up. As much as we enjoy the company of our Vaherian brethren, such an act will not be necessary in today’s times. The offer you have put forward is generous, far too generous after my seemingly inadequate show of diplomacy and I do thank you for that. I will be more than happy to discuss what my land has in store for our friendship beyond tourism however I believe a recess would be in place for your and my associates to … attend to our personal needs.”

On the Communal front, slow jazz, embers and the faint aroma of whiskey danced in the air as feet propped themselves high up on the office table. The MOFA and the Community Leader were occupied enjoying their free time cooped up in the Leader’s office, discussing life and the poignance of existence.

“You know what really sucks, romance.”, Lyn lamented whilst Hua Mei choked on the cigar, awfully familiar with the numerous fruitless endeavors her protege had proceeded with throughout her tenure as mentor. A sharp electronic beep disrupted the sombre mood the room had been in, especially with the curtains all drawn out to keep the urban noise out.

“Yellow.”, Hua Mei nonchalantly answered her smarphone. Soon, her face filled with insouciance soon wringed into an expression of disbelief as the muffled voice continuously yapped, blaring bad news on top of bad news over the speaker. Lyn attempted to figure out what was going on in the conversation, resigning to making gestures to make Hua Mei laugh.

“Ah … yeah, that’s fine. How are you talking to me right now though, you shouldn’t … you went to the toilet? … in the middle o- yeah okay, I get it. Just tell me what’s put on the table so far and we can help you out, yeah?”, Hua Mei flubbed. Lyn’s brows furrowed, anticipating the realization of her initial fears. The MOFA reluctantly slid the phone across the desk, motioning with her hands to be ‘gentle with Ami’.

“Baby girl, what IS up?”, Lyn forcibly yet jovially asked. The metaphorical floodgates gave way, Lyn grimacing with each avid description of the event that had unfolded mere moments ago.

“Yes, okay. Chill Mi, chill! You just gotta compose yourself. Be simple, I’ll tell you what’s up and you showcase it to them and if they agree … then good but if not, then … you do your thing. Come on, baby girl. You can do it. Whole floor’s your oyster. You don’t have to consult us for the specifics...”.

Soon after, the conversation ended with the Community Leader and the MOFA slouching on their cushioned seats, each breathing out a sigh of their own. Lyn leaned toward Hua Mei, the musk of scotch on her breath, and questioned her teacher, “Still think she’s doing fine? I kinda hate to be an asshole but I kinda told you so…”.

Hua Mei merely shrugged it off. “Hey, you weren’t a pearl when you came to my desk, yeah. Don’t be so hard on the kid. Even Lyn the Great was but a mere speck before she had met the blacksmith that was Hu-..”, she had proclaimed, barely getting the sentence out before belching her gut out.

Ami strode towards where they had left off when the talks resumed, this time carrying a tablet with a little bit more information than it had before her latrine break. As she inched closer to the herald once more, she handed him the tablet with slightly more confidence than she had before … her latrine break. “I wholeheartedly agree with the proposed terms that you have presented with us thus far and I will assure you that the Community is ready to accommodate and put up the necessary measures to ensure that you also enjoy the same concessions, tariff reductions and subsidies that you have generously endowed upon us. In addition …”. She lifted a finger to scroll down to reveal an additional offer that wasn’t clearly a brainchild of sitting on the porcelain throne.

“In order to stay true to our commitment of building a rapport between our businesses, I would reckon allowing people to travel to and fro our countries without a need for a visa can truly empower the most important reason for economic momentum - human resources. Not to mention, it would certainly help with the aforementioned plans to move forward with increasing the value of tourism amongst our lands.”.

Before the herald could even get a word in, Ami resumed her monologue, “In addition, we would also be more than willing to reduce the tariffs further for regional-exclusive exports even for a tad bit. For example, Aiyrania may enjoy up to another 2% reduction on tariffs on your region’s exclusive goods. Whatever it may be can be left up for discussion but this is but a sample of how we would like to extend our hand in building the bridge.”

The emissary barely held his face together as Ami stood up and excused herself, looking over at his attendant as she just...left, the attendant shrugging in response. A gamble, to be certain, but not an unknown one. And this is the reaction? Either the girl was legitimately distraught, or her career in performance gave her a flair for the dramatic. This would definitely go into the report, others would want to know. Could also prove troublesome if overused though definitely useful.

Turning over to his attendant he gestured for them to come closer, an exchange of whispers occurring just as Ami returned. He concluded by handing the attendant a folded piece of paper, the attendant passing by the Communal emissary and out the door just as she entered and began her monologue.

Taking out a small handkerchief he took the tablet with it before reading over the contents as Ami spoke. Rather quick turnaround, that. As she finished her talk he handed her the tablet back, "So i shall assume that either they said yes or the time you spent in our bathrooms was most productive. Either way, this agreement is agreeable to us. Your country has thus far shown no issues which would cause trouble in granting you visa-free travel in and out of Ras in return for the same. In regards to the 2% we also find this proposal amenable and a good beginning of a response to our offer. Of course, there is a catch, the exception to this rule, as it were."

He placed the tablet down on the table "Old Ras will not, can not, extend these privileges to the location known as Port Henri by the northern rats. Your inability to maintain the fullness of your sovereignty or to expel the barbarians causes great concern for our people. While we can trust you, it is only to an extent until this cancer is expunged, and barbarity is expelled from the shores of your island."

He turned to face the balcony, "To that extent it may be possible that, by divine intervention as it were, help in these matters comes along your way. Of course this aid would have nothing to do with us, busy as we are maintaining our border with the savages." he tapped his fingers on the table, "I would ask that your leadership consider this thing above all others. We know the pain of having our people be imprisoned." he turned towards the girl, his face dour and serious, "So we would, without doubt, be willing to send a few prayers your way. The gods are always listening, after all."

Biting her lip, she squeaked, “It was indeed very productive.” without knowing whether he was referring to her attending to her hygiene or her trying to rebound from what seemed to be a crappy showing of Communal diplomacy so far. She had soon figured out what he meant with him using a kerchief to receive her offer. Just as she was relieved to hear that all were good in the eyes of the emissary, the dreaded ‘but’ had befallen into her cochlea. With good reason, Hua Mei had pointed out that discussion of Port Henri was a huge no, especially for newbies like her, though the warning was due to the volatile relationship currently residing in peace.

Ami cleared her throat, “Mayhaps ‘cancer’ is too harsh of an adjective for our neighbours, oh amicable sir. Eggshells are what we step on on a daily basis with regards to Port Henri and there is no guarantee where the relationship with Vaheria will take us next in the coming years. So, any bills, policies and laws implemented besides what is already in place is going to be a wrench thrown into the bridge we have established so far, no matter how beneficial they are to either side. I assure you however, as much as Port Henri is a part of the Community, it will not be subject to any of the agreements made today or in the future. It is one of our policies - not to interfere with Port Henri’s activities right now as it remains under the guidance of their laws.”

She followed meekly behind him, the rays of the sun slightly torching her pale skin as she intently listened to his monologue. “I may not be able to tell you what will happen after the sun sets.”, she uttered. “...but I can be confident in telling you that our leaders are all over it with the people in mind and peace always being the priority.”.

Ami may have not been a woman of faith but to repay the man in kind, she placed her palms on her chest and bowed. “ As does the Community to Aiyrania.”. Before she could let the emissary rip off on another tangent about her toilet escapades, she added on. “If I may ask, what are your perceptions of the Community currently? As lively as we are on the inside, I do believe I am not undermining our presence by stating we haven’t really made any ripples in the ocean, for better or for worse.”

He held back his desire to roll his eyes. At the very least she was trying. Still, the steering of the conversation was enough of an answer, "Enough is said by the lack of a concrete reply. Inform your superiors then. I hope your reports are more detailed than your rhetoric." he started, ignoring the girl's question at first, "Either way, we expect you to not fumble in regards to this. Our laws are not to be skirted around. And cancer is the only way to describe that malignant and parasitic growth. Incapable of civilisation the savage grasps at it in furious envy, attacking all in kind to sate his pathetic sense of pride. Lazy as he is he takes the work of others and claims it for his own. He stupidly wonders why he is isolated when he seeks agreements while plunging his filth ridden shiv into your belly. There is no negotiating with cancer. It only grows and festers while you try to coddle a disease with words. And so, as it is only willing to be cancer, it must be cast out, excised. Reason, logic, respect. These are a privilege that can be lost like any other."

"As for your question," He paused, looking the woman up and down, "Šâhanšâh is ever merciful and kind, and values all peoples and nations, as is his duty. All nations have a place at his table, so long as they are willing to act in accordance with the law, which maintains peace and prosperity for all. Those incapable of controlling their base urges lose that privilege. Do try to keep yours in check. Thus far you have kept to that promise, better than some, if not most. Šâhanšâh sees your effort and values it as he values our own. Yet to better one's self is the constant goal of anyone who wishes to bask in his light. Of course we would never leave anyone helpless and alone in so great an endeavour, and offer our help as freely as we offer our friendship. One need but ask."

Sliced down by his curtness, Ami could not do anything but take her lumps as she remained the socially submissive one in the game of diplomacy that was laid out in front of her. She replied, “Negotiating with them is one of the key agendas we have as an administration, as unfortunate it may sound to you. We are very certain not to resort to unwarranted aggression despite the tough road ahead of us. I would love to believe that such a scenario will not happen any time but politics is as fickle as the flames of the candle so no matter how much one may try … the other may still exercise wanton lack of caution.”

At that point, Ami was confused as to whether the emissary was hinting at something. “You have already done so a couple of times already…”, she shakily began the query. “... but please pardon me if I ask - do you mean you intend to assist the Community with our conference with .. uhh … the cancer ? I am not too sure I can accept that nor am I sure the administration is ready for such help seeing as how volatile the landscape can be.”

The man stared at her with a deadpan look. Peformers. Typical. More than typical, this woman must be the personification of all the jokes everyone makes about their kind.

Taking a deep breath, he calmly spoke, "We would never publicly state anything of the like. Publicly. Suffice to say your leaders should know that when it comes to the removal of the unclean, they will always find a helping hand in our people. We too suffer, as you suffer, and is suffering not lessened by leaning upon another? As such tell your leaders that they need only ask for support and they will be given it. Ras itself will not negotiate with the savages. They spoke all the words they needed to when they stabbed us in the back like the cowards they are. But there's more than one way to skin a rat, and knowing these rats, their preferred world is one in which you are their puppet and they're allowed a military base. Effectively re-branding the cancer. So, before the conference you have our support. And after it, when the cancer proves to be just that, and we are proven to be right, as we always are, you will have our support then also. To that effect, and because the cancer will be infuriated, if unwilling to show it, we also offer a public exchange. Wherever, whenever. Share in the fruits of each other's work upon the Allsong, and all shall prosper. Any such details could be worked out now, or later, as it appears you have been quite overwhelmed by our previous discussion, and so as to prevent you needing another session to calm your nerves, i shall not bother you further in regards to this."

Her eyes remained staring anywhere that the emissary didn’t occupy. She uttered, “O-of course not ! I wasn’t implying anything of the such … Admittedly, I am very much unable to speak about what is happening with Port Henri but I reckon my superiors are already aware that they need not to hesitate to plead for help should the time for it emerges. We’re proud of what we have accomplished as a nation but everything has their limits. And admittedly, I was more equipped for matters like this …”.

Ami fumbled on her tablet, minimizing windows and scrolling past documents she had prepared for the meeting. Upon pressing on the file she desired, she gently slid the tablet onto the railing just ahead of the emissary, the device’s window disclosing requesting permission between the two nations. She continued whilst keeping her gaze away from the emissary out of fear, “I also came here on behalf of our Tourism Minister who had always wanted to solidify the ability of the Communal culture to entice curiosity beyond our shores. She’s keen on proposing if your region would be interested in hosting a miniature summit of Communal culture and heritage. It’s an experimental venture beyond our shores by her so …”

She scrolled slowly down the list of logistics, including but not limited to requesting for access to cargo transport to ship in manpower and resources required for the guinea pig-esque summits. “... as you can see.”, Ami resumed, “...they won’t be massive in-scale but enough to see whether her ventures could do wonders to the revenue derived from tourism economics. Of course it will not be a one-time matter as she also is looking to explore beyond Ras.”

“I think what she requires the most from you in the near future would just be your blessings for her to establish the summit. Not much will be required after all, mayhaps clearances for venues, some assistance in marketing the joint but everything else will be with our hands…”

She bit into her lip, anxious to hear whether she had disappointed him for the umpteenth time.

"This prospect may get the adequate permissions." the emissary leaned back in his chair, "And yet a few questions i would ask, if you would humour me yet again. Where exactly do you want to hold this event, do you want to hold it independent of anyone or in cooperation with someone, like our own ministry? How many people would come in on average? And most importantly of all, is this street facing two ways, that is to say may we also participate, but in your nation as you do in ours?" tapping hif fingers on the table he looked outside, relaxing.

"To be clear, i am not saying no, nor am i going to be making requests that would be unreasonable. Merely i wish to further understand the situation at hand. I have been authorised and encouraged to discuss this subject with you as extensively as your people desire, but i none the less require concrete information so that the truth may be clear to see. Ras is a big nation, there are plenty of places to hold it, there are plenty of organisations and individuals to hold it with, be they related to our most august government or not. In turn we must be made aware of projected figures for attendance as well as the one's participating. Health and safety concerns remain a thing, as i'm sure you'll understand. And of course our government encouraged me to propose a cultural exchange as i did, so i believe there is opportunity for both participating nations to prosper as a result of such an agreement and exchange. We are of course aware that in any case this is less to our advantage. You have fewer people, we have more, it's quite clear who will be gaining the tourist surplus. Yet none the less such an act could, under the right circumstances, foster greater cooperation between our peoples and much more importantly get the public opinion on our side in regards to this cooperation and any potential ones in the future."

He turned to face Ami, a slight smirk forming on the old man's face, "And i need not mention the benefits of others seeing such things, need i? Small seeds sprout great oaks. And where others join it would provide much needed benefits for all, and much more importantly on our end, work towards restoring international trust in the empire being back. It is easier to trust in someone's return if you see it with your own eyes, and the more eyes see, the greater the truth becomes."
