“You think she’ll do well out there in the world?”, Lyn asked Hua Mei, her eternal mentor in and out of the office.
“What do you mean out there in the world, good Jieun. She’s just going to visit the Rasians.”, Hua Mei waved off the sort of anxiety she had anticipated from her protege.
“I’m just saying, I saw the internet comments, people have been mocking us for giving her fifty thousand Cunae just to be a diplomat and an honorary princess. We don’t even live in a constitutional monarchy. So, she had better not mess this up”.
Hua Mei simply snorted, almost as if she was disappointed by Lyn for some reason, “That’s the normal pay for our diplomats. If they want to huff and puff about giving our honorary princess an average wage, then so be it. You’re not giving the poor girl enough props, we’re talking about a former girl group member here.”
Just as their secretive conversation had ended, the double doors in front of them swung open, revealing the princess awaiting by the windows - her porcelain skin not at all singed by the mellow sunlight and her brownish hair gently penduluming with each step she took. The manila folder she had clutched with her right hand appeared crumpled and her eyes were void of appreciation for the beauty of the nature ahead.
“Ami.”, Lyn addressed the honorary princess-turned-diplomat.
At the slightest noise, Ami jumped in shock as she spun around, realized who was in front of her and gave a quick but deep bow. Hua Mei chuckled, pressing the lass down onto a cushioned chair. “Relax, right? If we’re to follow the bygone traditions, we are supposed to be the ones doing that to you.”.
The princess sighed as deep as her bow, “I’m just anxious, is all. I’ve never done such a thing alone before. Usually, Hua Mei unnie will be there with me as someone I can consult whenever we do the conferences. I … I don’t really know how to formulate and approach situations should they go sour. In the training course, they did say always to de-escalate but how do I know which method I should use to de-escalate tension … “.
Before she could squeak another word, Lyn forced an exhale causing the quivering diplomat to straighten her posture. Whilst she massaged her nose bridge, the CL asked her a question, “What were you before all of these, Ami?”
She hesitantly mumbled, “A CPOP idol.”
Lyn then followed up the conversation, “ I mean let’s be real here but I doubt there will be any correlations between all the singing, the dancing, and the entertaining out there on the music videos and the work being done by the diplomatic force. But, if you think hard enough, Ami, there’s things you learnt in your industry that you can transfer over here. In fact, that probably gives you an edge over the rest of the fellows here. You’ve got the people skills. Don’t you guys do interviews and sho-”
“Handshake and fan signing events too, social dynamics and all that jazz”, Hua Mei added on as Ami snapped her fingers at her mentor in agreement.
“See, you’ve got the knowledge and the experience. You just have to … I don’t know, ‘idol’ it up. We’re talking Rasians here, they love anyone with flair and flamboyance.”
By then, it was Hua Mei who was pointing her fingers at Lyn, “They sure god damn do. Went to dinner with the Rasians and they won’t let me tone it down. The best way to a Rasian’s heart is a little bit of pizzazz both with the speaking and in the actions.” Ami confusedly accepted the nuggets of wisdom that was served to her. “Flair and flamboyance, yes, I got it ma’ams”, she hesitantly thanked her two teachers. Hua Mei rolled over to her side, gently squeezing her palm to comfort the lass.
“Diplomacy is an old man’s game, as my training course teacher told me when I started. It’s kinda true - I mean, he passed due to old age whilst still being in the game so to speak but who’s to say the young ones aren’t good at it too, no?”, Hua Mei smirked at the princess. Ami returned the favour, smiling for the first time in two days since the news of her solo venture to the world outside of the Community reached her. Lyn couldn’t help but crack a smile herself, though whether it was due to Ami opening up slowly to the rest of the rabble or Hua Mei’s infrequent soft side would never be known.
“You can do it, Ami.”, she consoled her force’s newest member.
The clock struck eight, a signal for Tanaka Ami to disappear once more into the numerous conference rooms of the Blue House to get briefed by the transport. The doors behind her slowly crept to a closure, the gust from their motion blowing her hair forward to signal where she should look metaphorically and literally. As her steps disappear off her radar, Hua Mei jokingly jabbed Lyn on the arm, causing the Community to flinch and drop a paperwork or two.
“Nice analogy, miss Lee. You gotta learn not to express anger with your breaths. You’re huffing way too audibly.”
“I wasn’t angry, I was sighing … ‘cause I’m worried.”
“Worried about?”
“Well, for one, the public opinion and two which is more important, her.”
“So that shtick about you pushing her to a pedestal and saying ‘oh yeah Ami, you can do it’ was just the political Lyn flair speaking then. So, she can’t do it after all?”
“Nah, she can and she will. And maybe next time you can stop shoehorning in your dead mentor in every anecdote you make ... good Jieun.”
